Now available on internet : For "The First Night " by Soseki Natsume

Background

I made this soundtrack back in 2006, right around the time I was making arrangements to move to Paris.... I was also a member of the music team for the creation of "Mnemosne" (I forget the exact title...), a collaboration with Theatre Galassi, just before Ku Na'uka joined SPAC.

As part of the promotion of the omnibus film "Ten Nights of Dreams" which was distributed by a major film company at the time, I was asked to create soundtracks for the "First Night" in the omnibus film "Ten Nights of Dreams: Pirate Edition"  which was by independent film directors as a counterpart to the major one. I had been a fan of Soseki Natsume's works since before this request, and had been thinking "I'd like to create music for this someday...", so it was a nice situation for me.

To be honest, I don't know if the film itself was a success or not, and information about the independent version is almost nonexistent nowadays.  Regardless of what the film sales, there is no doubt that this work has become an important sound source for me. That is why I decided to sell and distribute on line.

 About this work

I won't go into details about the story of the movie nor novel, since you can find that out by reading.

I divided into three parts and created this soundtrack for each part. To tell it roughly,

1st track is for the opening scene where  "The Wife" disappears in(after) saying "Please wait 100 years..." 2nd one is for the main character continues waiting..., and the 3rd one, they meet again.

The musical writing was like a minimal music, John Cage, or ambient music. I made small motifs intersect with each other with a kind of coincidence at first. And I edited after to take a shape.

For the 1st track, a haze that the "wife" was disappearing into ...and the lily's scent that wakes  him  for the third track...these kind of things like humidity, fragrance... that I wanted to make us feel from the sound.

For these tunes, I wanted to create a sound full of overtone's intersection, so I was playing note by note with bow and all notes were with open strings or natural harmonics . I re-tuned for each note for it.I thought this would produce richer overtones and clearer sound.

The 2nd one, In this sketch, main character were walking in the dark...this was the visual image the director gave me for this part.

I made a kind of collage in editing small motives with usual pizzicato, " prepared contrabass " and extended techniques . It is more like a music concrète technique I think. I wanted to create a surrealistic musical language that fits to the dream world.
